History of the AR Foundation
The Asian Reporter Foundation was officially launched in 2003 with the goal of representing and highlighting Asian culture and heritage. From 1999 until 2003, The Asian Reporter newspaper had sponsored and coordinated the Scholarship and Awards Banquet. In 2003, the Foundation took over operation of the banquet and initiated the first annual AsiaFest. The AR Foundation continues to operate with the simple purpose of giving back to the community. As we grow we seek new avenues for involvement in activities that represent our mission. The Foundation currently oversees our signature event -- the Scholarship and Awards Banquet. We are striving to make them opportunities for sharing, educating, and celebrating Asian culture and heritage.
The AR Foundation offers volunteer opportunities to persons who would like to be a part of our events and support the community. If you would like to volunteer or learn more, please email us.
The Foundation is currently seeking performers such as ethnic dancers and singers for AsiaFest, held annually at the Oregon Convention Center. This festival is growing rapidly and in the future may become a two-day festival on the Portland waterfront. We are in our third year and continue to find ways to improve the festival and our outreach to the community.
Our Scholarship and Awards Banquet takes place annually in late April and is currently held at northeast Portland's TAO Event Center. The Banquet is now in its fiftheen year. We currently need volunteers to serve as greeters and ushers, as well as assistance with setup and cleanup. Cultural performers are also sought.
